My Site Migration in SharePoint

Now a days, I am working on migration from SharePoint 2007 to SharePoint 2013. We have choose the content db approach to migrate our portal, firstly we have to migrate our content from SharePoint 2007 to SharePoint 2010 and then SharePoint 2010 to SharePoint 2013. Right now I am working on migrate my site from SharePoint 2007 to SharePoint 2010, I'll share the migration steps of SharePoint My Site 2010 to SharePoint My Site 2013 migration in next few days.  I am sharing the steps that need to perform for my site migration 1.     Take a backup of the MOSS 2007 SSP and the My Site databases through SQL Server. 2.     Restore the SSP database as ‘Profile DB’ and the My Site Content database as ‘WSS_Content_MySites’ in the SharePoint 2010 -SQL Server instance. 3.     Create a Web Application through SharePoint 2010 Central Administration to host My Site. 4.     Attach and upgrade the restored 2007 My Sites data...

Download/Extract a WSP from SharePoint 2010 using PowerShell

In our recent project we were facing an issue with page layouts, so we need to check our WSP solution on server. In the Central Administration screen, a link is not available for you to download the WSP solution. We can extract the WSP from farm with custom code but I have used below 3 lines of PowerShell code to achieve my goal $spfarm = Get-SPFarm $wspfile = $spfarm.Solutions.Item("wspfilename.wsp").SolutionFile $wspfile.SaveAs("d:\extract\wspfilename.wsp") Make sure, you would be a member of Farm Administrators group and have permission to the configuration database.

Working with Remote BLOB Storage (RBS) and SharePoint

In my recent project, we are using the RBS for upload files to SharePoint. While we are uploading a file to SharePoint, it is stored in content database. In RBS, insted of upload files to SharePoint content database, use file system to store files. In SharePoint Foundation 2010, a binary large object (BLOB) is a large block of data stored in a database that is known by its size and location instead of by its structure — for example a Microsoft Office 2010 document or a video file. By default, these BLOBs, also known as unstructured data, are stored directly in the SharePoint content database along with the associated metadata, or structured data. Because these BLOBs can be very large, it might be better to store BLOBs outside the content database. BLOBs are immutable. Accordingly, a new copy of the BLOB must be stored for each version of that BLOB. Because of this, as a database’s usage increases, the total size of its BLOB data can expand quickly and grow larger than...

More detailed documentation on CAML and the CAML Designer can be found here . Maximilian Melcher also recorded a video on the ...

Increase performance of SharePoint 2010 Server site

What? How to tune SharePoint 2010 Server for better performance? Why? SharePoint has an array of areas where performance is an issue and bottlenecks occur. It is particularly important for public web sites, but Intranet sites & collaborative sites benefit from this as well. In this post we will learn how to tune SharePoint 2010 for better performance. How? Before you even start thinking about improving your performance, keep in mind that even the best configuration won’t help you if your hardware is simply too weak to handle the SharePoint environment.  SharePoint is very memory intensive. Always plan for fast network cards and plenty of RAM! It is very important that the server achieve the fastest response possible from the I/O subsystem. More and faster disks or arrays provide sufficient I/O operations per second (IOPS) while maintaining low latency and queuing on all disks. In this post we will look at the below: Infrastructure Optimization ...

Programmatically Create Terms and Term Set

SharePoint Server 2010 introduces a new column type named managed metadata. When you create a managed metadata column, you specify the term set from which the column's values must come. When you want users to provide information for list items (including documents), and the valid values for the information are contained in a term set, use a managed metadata column. Create a new content type or modify an existing content type, and then add the managed metadata column to the content type. This post describes the way of programmatically creating a managed metadata taxonomy column and adding the column to a custom content type. In this article, you: 1- Create a SharePoint 2010 project 2- Add reference of "Microsoft.SharePoint.Taxonomy" assembly to your project and include namespace "Microsoft.SharePoint.Taxonomy". 3- Use below code. using (SPSite site = new SPSite(" http://sharepointserver/ "))             {   ...

Setting WebPartLimits Attributes

One of my team member was face an issue regarding the web parts on a page i.e." The maximum number of Web Parts for all zones on this page has been exceeded ". After analysis I found on that page there are 60+ web parts on that page. I am sharing the quick solution with you. Resolution To resolve this issue you have to set the Web Part limit in application web.config. file. There are two Web Part limit attributes: · MaxZoneParts specifies the total number of Web Parts allowed within all Web Part zones on a Web Part Page. · PropertySize specifies the maximum number of bytes used to store Web Part properties on the server. The following example sets the Web Part limit attributes <SharePoint>     <WebPartLimits MaxZoneParts=" 50 " PropertySize=" 1048576 " /> </SharePoint> You just have to update the MaxZoneParts value to web parts count availabe on your page or exceed and update the PropertySize value. ...
