What? How to tune SharePoint 2010 Server for better performance? Why? SharePoint has an array of areas where performance is an issue and bottlenecks occur. It is particularly important for public web sites, but Intranet sites & collaborative sites benefit from this as well. In this post we will learn how to tune SharePoint 2010 for better performance. How? Before you even start thinking about improving your performance, keep in mind that even the best configuration won’t help you if your hardware is simply too weak to handle the SharePoint environment.  SharePoint is very memory intensive. Always plan for fast network cards and plenty of RAM! It is very important that the server achieve the fastest response possible from the I/O subsystem. More and faster disks or arrays provide sufficient I/O operations per second (IOPS) while maintaining low latency and queuing on all disks. In this post we will look at the below: Infrastructure Optimization ...

SharePoint Server 2010 introduces a new column type named managed metadata. When you create a managed metadata column, you specify the term set from which the column's values must come. When you want users to provide information for list items (including documents), and the valid values for the information are contained in a term set, use a managed metadata column. Create a new content type or modify an existing content type, and then add the managed metadata column to the content type. This post describes the way of programmatically creating a managed metadata taxonomy column and adding the column to a custom content type. In this article, you: 1- Create a SharePoint 2010 project 2- Add reference of "Microsoft.SharePoint.Taxonomy" assembly to your project and include namespace "Microsoft.SharePoint.Taxonomy". 3- Use below code. using (SPSite site = new SPSite(" http://sharepointserver/ "))             {   ...

One of my team member was face an issue regarding the web parts on a page i.e." The maximum number of Web Parts for all zones on this page has been exceeded ". After analysis I found on that page there are 60+ web parts on that page. I am sharing the quick solution with you. Resolution To resolve this issue you have to set the Web Part limit in application web.config. file. There are two Web Part limit attributes: · MaxZoneParts specifies the total number of Web Parts allowed within all Web Part zones on a Web Part Page. · PropertySize specifies the maximum number of bytes used to store Web Part properties on the server. The following example sets the Web Part limit attributes <SharePoint>     <WebPartLimits MaxZoneParts=" 50 " PropertySize=" 1048576 " /> </SharePoint> You just have to update the MaxZoneParts value to web parts count availabe on your page or exceed and update the PropertySize value. ...

Problem: Today one of my team member is getting a issue with the HTML files that is present in a SharePoint document library. His requirement was to click the page (page.html) link and open the same HTML file in browser but when he click to html page link a prompt comes asking for download the file. Resolution It is a new security setting in SharePoint 2010. This is the procedure how to change the default behavior: Go to Central Administration Select Manage web applications Select the web application you want to modify In the Ribbon, click the General Settings button and select General Settings from the drop down menu In the section Browser file handling, select Permissive instead of Strict .   Conclusion You can specify whether additional security headers are added to documents that are served to Web browsers. These security headers specify that a browser shows a download prompt for certain types of files (for example, .html), and to use the server's specifi...
